Texas Historical Foundation visits the

Armstrong County Museum

And Goodnight House!

Armstrong County Museum hosted the Texas Historical Foundation Board on Friday, October 14, 2011.  Approximately 24 individual THF Board members from throughout Texas participated.  They were met by over a dozen Armstrong County Board members who enjoyed touring them through the ongoing restorations of the Goodnight house, a visit to the Goodnight Cemetery and a tour of the extensive collections in the Museum at Claude. Montie Goodin, Chairman of the Museum Board, shared highlights during the house tour from her vantage point of being born in the Goodnight house, the daughter of the ranch foreman.

The group was hosted at the Goodnight Community Center to buffalo burgers cooked by the Bar H Dude Ranch of Clarendon. Buffalo Gold, owned by Cecil and Darleen Miskin, producers of bison fiber and “herdwear” items, provided the buffalo meat.  The group was entertained by the guitar and singing of Dustin Sanders, formerly of the Claude area.

At the conclusion of their tours, the group enjoyed viewing the artwork of Kenneth Wyatt in the Art Gallery.  Then they entered the Gem Theatre where they were treated to a report by Charlotte Rhodes, VP for Amarillo Area Foundation, on the Charles Goodnight Historical Center restoration process and funds garnered.  They also heard a report on the Bison herd at Caprock Canyons State Park in Quitaque by its director, Donald Beard.

It was both an enlightening and enjoyable day according to comments made by the THF Board members.  They are the body that voluntarily travels the state and oversees Foundation funding toward worthy preservation projects in Texas.  They were pleased to see all the efforts underway that will allow the Goodnight Historical Center to open by early Fall 2012.
